For many couples there really is no place like home, which is why there has been a rise in the number of wedding receptions being hosted at home. A wedding at home can be a truly personal affair but before you commit your family home to the occasion, check out these points to get it just right.
The size of the matter
First things first… consider your surroundings. Before you and your other half agree on a wedding of 200 guests, consider your surroundings. Does your setup have enough space for all of your guests? If not, you’ll need to trim your numbers. Don’t mistake crowded for cosy as your guests won’t thank you for it.
When hosting a wedding at home, the safest option is to hire a marquee, which should have dedicated spaces available for the drinks reception, dining and evening reception, to easily accommodate your wedding size.
Preparation is key
If you are envisioning backyard bliss for your wedding day, you’ll need to get to work early as no doubt you’ll want the space to look amazing, particularly as it will serve as the backdrop for those important wedding photos. Consider the area and what maintenance is needed. If you’re dreaming of a garden in bloom, manicured lawns and freshly painted fences, your prep should begin at least 12 months before before the big day. In the countdown to the day, you may need to bring in gardeners, window cleaners and general cleaners to ensure everything is in tip top shape.
Savvy suppliers
When it comes to suppliers for your wedding, you’ll have to consider those things which come as standard in a hotel, such as having suitable space for your caterers. If you’re hiring a marquee, check if tables and chairs can be provided or if you’ll need to source these elsewhere. And when nature calls, where will your guests go? If you aren’t opening up your house for the occasion, consider portaloos, which have become much more posh in recent years.
Accommodating guests
No doubt the vast majority of your guests will be driving and it’s likely that your home can’t accommodate all of their cars. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to consider your options. Is there a car park or field nearby, or would your neighhbours be kind enough to open up their driveways for the occasion? Alternatively, if these aren’t options, you’ll need to let guests know so that they can arrange alternative transportation. You’ll also need to consider where your guests will stay. Provide out-of-towners will a list of local accommodation so they can spend the night.
Be nice to your neighbours
Speaking of neighbours, you’ll need to inform them of your plan at least 6 weeks before the wedding. Better still, if you get along, invite them! They might even allow your guests to avail of their driveways for parking.
Get personal
No doubt your reason for getting married at home is to ensure it’s a personal affair so this is where the fun starts. It’s your space to do whatever you want so make the most of your surroundings. Is there furniture or props within the house which would work well as a relaxing area for guests? Do you have a favourite space in the garden for some photos with your other half? When it comes to props, the options are endless. Outdoor bunting and balloons instantly transform a space, while added touches such as homemade jam and rustic flowers add a touch of romance.
Let there be light
If your reception will continue long into the night, you’ll need to consider your lighting. Add dramatic elegance with candles and paper lanterns or offer A Midsummer Night’s Dream feel with twinkling fairy lights.
It’s all worth it
While there may be a little more to consider when hosting your wedding at home, there is nothing more personal than spending a day with your family and friends in sentimental surroundings. With a little prep it can definitely be the day of your dreams.
