I rejoined the PPANI

The year 2018 brought a whirlwind of changes into my life with the arrival of my daughter, Sophie. The days quickly filled up with the demands of parenthood, and I realised that some of my commitments would have to take a back seat for a while.

For 15 years, I’ve been in the business of capturing the magic of weddings as a professional photographer. During most of that time, I was a proud member of the Professional Photographers of Northern Ireland Association (PPANI). This association is home to Northern Ireland’s most remarkable photographers, who uphold the highest standards in the industry. I even had the privilege of serving on the council, attending those monthly meetings filled with the craic and discussions on association matters.

Just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I made the tough decision to step away from the association. As time passed, I couldn’t help but acknowledge how much I missed the sense of community, the opportunities for professional growth, and the chance to learn from others.

Being a photographer is more than just a profession; it’s a calling. It’s an art form that unites people, and through my involvement with PPANI, I encountered kindred spirits who shared my passion. They weren’t just colleagues; they became my friends.

As a professional photographer, it’s crucial to keep evolving and expanding one’s skills. The photography world is in a constant state of flux, with new techniques, technologies, and trends constantly emerging. PPANI has always been a wellspring of knowledge and expertise. The guidance and insights I gained during my membership were truly priceless. Sometimes, even a casual chat over coffee could unlock the answers I’d been looking for.

This month, I took the step to rejoin the association as a member and attended a fun and informal gathering at Corick House.

I’m convinced that photographers are some of the most empathetic, open, and genuinely kind-hearted individuals you’ll ever meet. I ventured to the meeting with a local legend and fellow Doherty, Jay. When we walked into the room (a tad late), the room erupted in applause for Jay, and then, when someone exclaimed, “Donal’s back,” there was an enthusiastic cheer.

The day that followed was filled with reconnecting, a delightful lunch, and a photo session with an extraordinary dancer.

I am thrilled to be back as a member of this wonderful association, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
