Many girls will have spent considerable time daydreaming about layers of tulle, lashings of lace, flowing organza skirts and draping veils, all of which adds up to the true romantic wedding gown vision. However as glamorous and luxurious as this sounds, when it comes to a destination dress, a few factors need to be considered to find the ideal fit for your location. To lend a helping hand for any of you destination brides, guest blogger Aideen McCanny shares some points to weigh up to ensure you find your dream destination dress.

Having married abroad myself, I have faced every woe when it comes to finding that dream destination dress. For one, what you imagine donning to say your “I dos” and what you end up choosing are likely to be two very different things. Here are some of the factors I took into consideration in my quest to find my dream dress!
1) Whatever the weather
Whether it’s the hot climate of the Caribbean calling, or a winter wonderland wedding in the Alps, the weather of your chosen destination should be considered. Don’t be your own something blue! A winter wedding abroad calls for a dress with room to wear layers both underneath and on top. Practical accessories such as faux fur wraps will lend themselves wonderfully to your destination and enhance your overall theme. Likewise, for warmer climes, don’t be weighed down with tonnes of accessories. Keep your cool with minimal accessories and choose a dress with delicate detailing to take centre stage.
2) On the surface
Be practical! Consider what surfaces you will encounter on the day and let these determine the silhouette and fabric of your gown. Saying your nuptials on the sand? Opt for a dress that will effortlessly flow over the sand and in the sea breeze. Light fabrics such as chiffon and breathable lace are ideal. Are cobbled city streets calling? Choose your shoes carefully. Cobbles are a killer on stilettos so consider flats for during the day and change into heels for the reception.

3) Check your country’s customs
Catholic countries such as Malta uphold strong traditions which are common courtesy to respect. If you are getting married in a church, having your shoulders and knees covered is expected, and your guests should be informed of this too. A veil is perfect for keeping your back and shoulders covered for a minimalist approach, or for more coverage, go for a cover up which complements your gown and which can easily be removed following the service.
4) Get covered
Just like you would take out insurance for a holiday abroad, insurance for a destination wedding is essential! Unfortunately things can go wrong with the dress just like travel and holiday mishaps can happen so make sure you’re well covered!

5) Travelling with your dress
Don’t forget that your dress will need to make it to your destination too, with no hiccups and in the same condition as you left with it! My advice is to travel with your dress. Purchase a special wedding dress carry box to contain your dress. Either have this professionally packed by your bridal boutique or seamstress and keep it as part of your hand luggage. We know only too well that luggage goes missing so don’t gamble with your dress. Upon arrival, remove your dress, hang it up and have it steamed. Chiffon dresses pack perfectly and often all that is required is to hang it up in the bathroom with the shower running on hot for 10 to 15 minutes. Simple!
Now all that’s left to do is walk down that aisle in a comfortable yet stunning dress, in the beautiful surroundings of your dream destination.
